Vaccination May Increase Whooping Cough Incidence

I recently saw a heartbreaking post from a mother with a 6-week-old who had contracted Whooping Cough (Pertussis). Accompanying pictures of her child in the hospital with tubes hanging off her body was a stern warning:

So I wasn’t going to do this, but I think people need to see what not vaccinating their kids do to the OTHER kids, like my 6 week old daughter. [omitted] has been in the PEDS ICU since she was 6 weeks old (now 10 weeks) with whooping cough. She was on a ventilator for 3 weeks and CPAP for 3 days (she was the lucky baby, the other ones have been ventilated for months) and we’re still facing another 2 months in the hospital. She has to learn how to eat all over again, she’s going through major withdrawals from the morphine and sedative she was on when she was ventilated, do you know how hard it is to watch your 10 week old go through withdrawals??!! We were hours away from losing her, the nurse picked her up and ran her down the hall to the ICU to get her ventilated because we were losing her. What you do with your kids is your choice but do not tell me that not vaccinating your kids isn’t hurting anyone but your own kids, [omitted] is proof that it harms the other little babes who aren’t old enough to get their vaccines yet. My son is vaccinated to protect himself and the other kids he’s around. It never crossed my mind to not vaccinate, I want to protect my children and other children. Please vaccinate your kids, it’s not fair that my little girl is in the PICU coughing and not being able to breath from a disease that shouldn’t be around in this day an age ?

Please share so other people can see what happens when you don’t vaccinate!

This is a horrible case and one that’s becoming more and more common as incidence rates in the US and UK are on the rise again:

It breaks my heart to see little babies sick, however, I think it’s even more heartbreaking when the solution so many people are suggesting may actually be the cause. A study from 2015 published in BMC Medicine explains why we are seeing a rise in pertussis recently:

1) the vaccine mounted a sterilizing immune response that waned over time [7],

2) the pathogen evolved to escape sterilizing immunity induced by the vaccine [8], or

3) the vaccine failed to induce sterilizing immunity to the pathogen [9]

This last one is particularly important considering the Facebook post. The researchers parse it out a little more: “individuals vaccinated with current acellular B. pertussis vaccines (aP) can become asymptomatically infected, and can then transmit infection to susceptible individuals.

The study points at a switch from the whole cell Pertussis vaccine, which had a high incidence of side effects, to an acellular vaccine, which didn’t cause as many side effects, but also appears to fail in protecting from contagion: “As aP vaccination coverage increases, asymptomatic infections increase up to nearly 30-fold.”

This is bolstered by a study in Pediatrics that showed the most common source of infantile pertussis infection was an older (usually vaccinated) sibling:

Therefore, even in settings where all household contacts are up-to-date with pertussis vaccinations, asymptomatic transmission of pertussis may occur, further impeding the success of the cocooning strategy.

We see this so much in the medical profession—the solution is actually the problem—and it’s why iatrogenic illness is one of the leading causes of death in America. Medicine (in this case vaccination) may not always be the cure—it may actually be the disease.
