Red Rash on Hands?

I contracted a red rash on my hand last week. It didn’t really itch initially and it didn’t appear to be spreading. Was it a volleyball bruise? I don’t bruise. I was worried that I was the victim of some nasty flesh-eating bacteria that you hear about from time to time on social media. When it started blistering, I was really scared.

My wife thought it may have been something a little more benign. She noticed that it seemed to worsen in the sun and pulled up the report on phytophotodermatitis:

Phytophotodermatitis, also known as “lime disease” (not to be confused with Lyme disease),[1] “Berloque dermatitis”,[2] or “Margarita photodermatitis”[3][4] is a chemical reaction which makes skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet light. It is frequently mistaken for hereditary conditions such as atopic dermatitis or chemical burns, but it is caused by contact with the photosensitizing compounds found naturally in some plants and vegetables like parsnips, citrus fruits and more. Symptoms include burning, itching, stinging and large blisters that slowly accumulate over time.

Conclusion—thoroughly wash lime or lemon juice off your hands if you’re planning on going outside.
